Miss Bust-her
I first heard about Roller Derby when I was studying in Dundee in 2008. I was looking through the sports union catalogue when an advert jumped out the page at me. It was from a girl in Dundee who wanted to start a roller derby league and was looking for girls to join. I jumped at the chance and remember the first meeting in the back of a pub where talk inevitably turned to what our boutfits would look like! This was the beginning of the now Dundee Destroyers.
Due to lack of training locations, the league struggled to get going. In the meantime, I used to practice my skating at the indoor skate ramps during the girls only hour on Sundays. Nothing does wonders for your skating ego than 8 year old girls overlapping you and doing flips on the half pipes on in-lines!
Unfortunately I moved away from Dundee back up to Aberdeenshire just as the league got going so never got to officially train with the Destroyers, but the derby fire in my heart raged on. My skates and kit lay dormant in my garage for a year until I moved to Leeds in 2010 and joined LRD. I suddenly remembered why I loved skating and why I kept torturing myself in front of the 8 year old girls. The dolls made me feel so welcome straight away and made me forget I had just moved hundreds of miles away from home!
Though I'm still progressing and learning during practices, I can't wait until I can bout for real and finally complete my 3 year dream of kicking ass on track!
