Gorgon Roller

Gorgon Roller 10
Derby Number:
#10
Retired
How long have you been skating?:
Since January 2009; my New Year's Resolution was to find a new hobby, and it went and took over my life!
What does your derby name mean to you?:
Well it's a 'cheesy' pun! (Hehe, sorry.) I loved the Greek myths as a child and studied Classics at uni, so a snakey-haired monster seemed like a good thing to name myself after! I reckon I'm equally as fearsome as Medusa... don't you?
What's your best move/technique?:
I like a-hopping and a-skipping! Oh, and of course I can turn people to stone with a mere look...
What's your favourite roller derby anthem/tunes to skate to?:
House of Pain- Jump Around!
Your Derby Story:

After I left university I realised my life had suddenly got pretty quiet. Finally I decided I needed a new hobby, and roller derby sounded kind of cool...
I'd ice skated quite regularly in the past, so making the transition to quads didn't take too long, although I felt totally out of control at first!

My first bout, in June 2009, was probably the most nerve-racking experience of my life, as we faced the London Brawl Saints in front of a sell-out crowd. I was terrified and got repeatedly pummelled into the audience and even the paramedics (who are really not the people you want to injure!), but miraculously I survived and totally loved it! I'm not sure what my poor parents made of it though...

Now I've been skating for 2 years and am still totally in love with LRD and roller derby. It has completely changed my life: I've met incredible people (both LRD team-mates and skaters from across the country), I've become more confident in myself and I've had experiences I never would have dreamed of before!

My top 2 derby career highlights:
-My proudest personal achievement was at the 2010 Blood and Thunder All Stars bout. My team was 18 points behind, with enough time for 1 more jam. I was sent on as jammer, and with the help of my awesome team-mates we scored... 18 points. The opposition scored 5 and won the game, but it didn't matter! It felt like we had won!
-My most amazing experience with LRD has to be the bout against Glasgow (August 2010). I can't even describe how proud I am of LRD for that game! Both teams showed amazing teamwork, positivity and spirit, and the win for us just topped off an incredible bout.
