Bruise 'em Banshee

Bruise 'em Banshee
"Make 'em howl"
Derby Number:
#88
Rebel Roses Travel Team
How long have you been skating?:
Since November 2008
What does your derby name mean to you?:
It was a random choice at the time, juxtaposing the physicality of roller derby with "Bruise 'em" against the mythology of a female creature, a Banshee, that brought the message of death by wailing outside homes where someone was going to die. Banshee has turned out to be apt due to my reputation for being a loud-mouth on track!
What's your best move/technique?:
My capacity for remaining focused, determined and my desire to win.
What's your favourite roller derby anthem/tunes to skate to?:
Death From Above 1979, Rage Against The Machine and The Prodigy.
Favourite roller derby quote?:
Anything involving pre-bout nervous poos.
Any advice for a Ragdoll?:
Don't give up! It is such a steep learning curve as a Ragdoll so it's best to get stuck in and just ask for help if feeling overwhelmed.
What are you looking forward to in the 2012 season?:
Realising our potential as a team and as a league. Both our league teams are in a really good place right now and I'm looking forward to skating with the Rebel Roses and supporting the Whip Its. We have some exciting opposition this season to prove ourselves against.
Your Derby Story:

I joined Leeds Roller Dolls in November 2008 with my now retired derby wife Toxic Pink Stuff. I heard about roller derby when I lived in London but had never got the courage up to go to a skate session as I had never skated before. Once I moved to York, with a bit of encouragement from Toxic, we joined LRD which was the closest league to York at the time.

I have loved roller derby from the start and it has become a defining part of my lifestyle. Life pretty much revolves around training and bouts now, which though it's demanding at times, I wouldn't have it any other way. I love LRD as it's skater-driven, skater-run and a really strong community. We are continually striving to be the best skaters and best team that we can be, with the aim of playing competitive roller derby at a consistently high level.

I've achieved a lot since joining LRD, learning to skate was my first achievement! Since then, I was awarded MVP in my first bout against London Brawl Saints, guest skated at Nassfest and Tattoo Freeze, skated in the All-Stars v London Brawling bout, have had a positive impact on the development of skaters and the league as a training committee member from 2009-early 2012, captained the a-team and the league for the 2011 season.

Right now I see my biggest achievement as continuing to be committed, dedicated and passionate about roller derby after all the different experiences I've had and roles I've held with LRD. I feel like I'm entering a new phase as a skater and as a league member, and I'm really excited about the future.
