Bird of Pain

Bird of Pain 303
Everything's better on skates
Derby Number:
#303
Whip-Its Travel Team
How long have you been skating?:
Since November 2010
What does your derby name mean to you?:
My nickname was already 'Bird' so I knew I would answer to it straight away. People often need to yell at me on track and I need to know it's me they're yelling at! I did find it strange at first that people I didn't know so well were using the name that only my old, old friends had used before!
What's your best move/technique?:
erm.......I try to keep getting up no matter how many times i'm knocked down...is that a technique?!
Any advice for a Ragdoll?:
Keep at it, don't give up and remember to enjoy it!
What are you looking forward to in the 2012 season?:
We've got lots of away games planned and I'm really hoping to play with the Whip-Its in at least some of them. I want to get much better at everything but my focus will be on improving my pack work. I can't wait to think I've done a good job.
Your Derby Story:

I asked for skates for Christmas when I was 29 having loved my childhood red and silver boots. My Mum was really embarrassed buying them for her aged daughter but thankfully got over it! I put them on and went out in the street with all the kids on their new bikes. I was hooked. I spent a few years just skating round the park and from the car to work but then a friend mentioned Derby. It took me about two years to check it out, but the minute I stepped into an LRD training session, I knew I would love this sport!

Now that I know I can go fast (ish) I want to focus on my skills. Getting better and faster at stopping, turning, dodging hits, making good blocks, chasing the jammer, seeing the game. It makes me excited even thinking about it....!! Gotta go, training starts in half an hour!
